Notebook Rating System gone awry??

This isn't the exact one that I say before but it is very similar - 8600 has same or better ratings than 9100 or XPS in every cateogry in this comparison chart too...

I believe those ratings are based on individual areas of performance, not overall.  If I am incorrect please show me the link where it mentions this.

dmwc906, the 8600 outranks the XPS and 9100 in 2 categories.  It is better in "mobility" because it does not have that bulky built-in stand on the XPS.  This stand is designed to optimize the cooling capabilities because the nature of the processor and its intended use for games.  8600 also outranks it in "wireless optimized" because of the Centrino suite available.  I don't believe the mobile chip is even an option in the XPS and 9100 so the Centrino is not even available.  Just because the 8600 outranked XPS and 9100 in those 2 categories, it does not mean it a better computer.  Just better for peoples specific preferences.  I do beleive however that the XPS should of ranked higher in gaming performance because of the processor and optional 256mb video card.

I get what you're saying, dmwc906, don't worry, you're not going crazy. I agree that if someone didn't do their research properly and just looked at that sheet, they could be greatly mislead.

I think we are agreeing and disagreeing but have the same point. I agree that Dell is just trying to let consumers who do not know much about computing what products would suit their needs. However, the comparisons are mis-leading because if they wanted a notebook mainly for gaming, they would look at the chart and think the 8600 is just as good as the XPS for gaming, and better in other areas. However, we both know that if you are in the hunt for a gaming notebook, the 8600 doesn't have nearly the same capabilities as the XPS, but the chart doesn't tell you that. My point is simply that that type of chart won't necessarily help the group of people that would use it to pick out a computer.

Im not trying to debate, but Dell is simply letting you know the advantages of one over the other.  They are in no way saying "mobility" means better, or "wireless optimized" is better, they are only giving the details of the systems so the consumer can purchase based on the personal needs.
