OS not loading

I bought my laptop a few years ago, with Windows 7 already loaded & it's worked fine up till now.  Firefox started hanging up, so I switched to chrome.  A few days later, there was a note on the screen that my version was not genuine.  I tried restarting it, and now I get a black screen with nothing but the white cursor-arrow.

When I first got it, I made recovery discs as instructed, and I've tried putting the first one in the CD drive & restarting.  I can hear the CD drive scanning, but have been getting the same results.  Is there any way to fix this?

Hi DaJamster,

Welcome to Dell Commmunity forrum.

Please check if the HDD in detected in the BIOS. Tap F2 at start up to open the BIOS screen. Also run diagnostics on hardware components of the system. Refer to the link for assistance: http://dell.to/16KQ3r0 Reply in case of any error messages.

On the first (F2) test I saw this:
Fixed HDD          WDC       WD6400BEVT-75AORTO       (650 GB)

On the second test (F12) I got the following error message:
Error code 0142
Msg: error Code 2000-0142
Msg:   Harddrive 0-self test unsuccessful
status 71

I continued & got this:

Error Code 0123
Msg: Error Code 2000-0123
Msg:  integrity test failed

I continued & got the same message again:  Error Code 0123    etc.

Continuing the test brought me back to the second error code repeatedly.
