Another option, I guess, would be to replace the fan. Is this something that I could do easily on the Inspiron 8200? I'm sure dell will probably charge $200 to do it for me...

Again, instructions on getting inside the laptop would be nice in this instance too.

I currently own a two year old Dell Inspiron 8200. Recently, one of the fans have started to rattle -- quite loudly, I might add. After reading several messages, I came to the conclusion that I need to oil it. Whats the best way to get to the fan? Do I need to open up the laptop entirely? If so, is there a page to describe this procedure?

Oiling is a very bad idea.

Thanks for the reply -- that link helped. It looks as if I have to remove the entire motherboard to get to the fan... fun. Anyway, replacing the fan is probably the best route. Upon using FanGUI, I also noticed that the fan RPM is noticebly lower (almost by half).

Oiling is not a good idea.  I would suggest if you're in warranty to have the fans checked out by Dell.  If not, I can tell you that if you send your laptop in for an estimate, you will be told the systemboard will need changing as the fans are built onto that.  You might be able to clean out the fans which may stop the rattling.  Just remove the hinge cover (power buttons area) and take the 4 keyboard screws out from the bottom of the laptop, and you will have COMPLETE access to the fans.

Hope this helps.

Taking Liquidforce11's advice, I removed the keyboard, hinge cover, and cooling unit, allowing me full access to the fan. I tried to clean the fan up as much as possible using compressed air and a cloth.

Unfortunately, the rattling noise still occurs. Are there any other options and/or ideas?

I think you're pretty much stuck.  Only thing I can think of is to take the fans right off the motherboard and replace them with another one... (maybe buying a dead motherboard 8000,8100,8200 are all the same fans) and hope that they're good?

The fans on my Inspiron 8200 starting running constantly and much louder than normal.  I hit Fn-Z and the fans started working correctly again(quieter and only running when needed).  You may want to give this a try before making any repairs.
