Power button not 'clicking'

It has been three to four days that I've been facing this problem. The power button won't 'click'. I have to really compress/push the button with (unwanted) force. And I am really concerned about it as I think, with every passing day, I might be making it worse(though it doesn't seem to be). I don't want to go to some hardware repair shop as I don't really trust them(they charge a lot as well as mess a lot) and also I don't want to perform any 'operation' on it (as I don't trust myself either). So it'd be great if someone help me out or at least give me some idea about what might be the problem and how can I get myself out of it.

Hi SANAT AWASTHI,

Is the system model Inspiron 5558 as per the linked tags?

Is there any damage on the system? Was the system dropped at any point?

The power button on the palmrest and the power button module itself is located below the palmrest. It is required to open the chassis and disconnect almost all components in order to replace the module.

You could however, remove the keyboard and carefully reseat the power button FFC cable and check if it works. Download the service manual here - http://dell.to/2e2Nv4w

If the power button is functional, then I would suspect the mechanical plastic button on the palmrest might have worn out and hence the issue. In that case, the palmrest assembly needs to be replaced.

If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.

Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

The system model is the same that I mentioned. And also neither there is any damage on the system nor it was dropped at any point.

Since you mentioned if the power button is functional, yes it is and I am assuming(according to you) that the palmrest assembly needs to be replaced. Although I am still not really sure if there is warranty or not. I need to conform about the warranty and then only I'll think of something.

Again, thanks for the reply.

Hi SANAT AWASTHI,

Thank you for the update.

Kindly private message me the service tag and your name, so I could check the warranty details for you. If the system is under warranty, I could help book a service call based on your region and warranty type.

Alternatively, go to http://dell.to/1n3X2po  - enter the service tag and click the warranty tab and you could check the warranty as well.
