Precision M65 laptop not booting anymore / No Dell logo

Hi,

It seems that my 4-year old Precision M65 laptop doesn't boot anymore. When trying to boot, it powers on but nothing happens. No Dell blue logo, only a black screen. I'm unable to reach BIOS. I tried to swap memory modules with others modules that are working on a similar laptop (also a Precision M65), but that's not working either.

When pressing the "Fn" key while powering on, I'm also unable to reach the built-in diagnostic process. However, the two first keyboard lights are blinking while the third is enabled (but does not blink). I've been unable to find information about this error code. Any help? Do I need to replace my motherboard?

No, the mainboard is fine - it's the video card that has failed.

nVidia just settled with this issue - see

www.nvidiasettlement.com

You likely won't get much from the settlement - so don't get your hopes up too high, as the allocated amount is low.

The issue might be due to many reasons such as corrupted operating system or simlar one, one of them being motherboard or hardware problem.

I recommend you to try the steps in the below link:

Hi Santhosh,

Thanks a lot for these useful resources. I followed the "Troubleshooting Dell XP" link but get stuck at step 3 on this page: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&l=en&s=gen&docid=DSN_361138&isLegacy=true

I'm unable to continue by clicking on the "" link, as its target seems to not exist anymore :/

However, I've found this document: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=19&docid=122438&doclang=en&l=en&s=dhs

which seems to indicate that I need to replace the video card/motherboard (FLASH-FLASH-ON lights). That effectively might be the famous nVidia GPU defect.

I don't think the video chip as failed (the screen doesn't work because the laptop doesn't boot, not because it is unable to draw something on the screen), although I'm unable to check the part number of my nvidia card (which is integrated in the main motherboard): there are any reference number once I have logged in.

Today my Dell Precision M65 refused to boot. No Video signal at all.

I see my Laptop is affected by the Nvida settlement from 2010, but the claim period is over

Any chance to get a new GPU  ?
