Problem using keyboard when typing in Outlook Express

03/05/08

Greetings,

I am having a frustrating problem with my Inspiron 8200 after nearly six years.

I keep my laptop meticulously up-to-date with the latest virus definition files, Windows updates, software updates, etc. I regularly run scans with A-Squared, Ad-Aware, and Spy-Bot. The OS is WindowsXP with SP2. It is totally up to date.

Recently I started having a frustrating problem when I type, mostly when I'm in Outlook Express, but it does happen everywhere.

When I'm typing, for instance, and I make a mistake, or for no reason at all, all of a sudden the Start Menu will pop up, or the Outlook Express main page will pop up, or IE7 will pop up. Sometimes when I am typing an email, the cursor will jump to a different part of the email, like at the top of the page or at the bottom.

I've tried resetting the parameters in Microsoft Mouse and Intellipoint, but to no avail. I don't even know why this is happening.

Can anyone help me out or give me a suggestion about what to do? I would be much obliged.

See if you somehow started the Accessibility Options in Control Panel. There is a "Sticky Keys" setting or another disability option that might be causing this. You can inadvertently trigger this setting by using shortcut key combos. Set the options to notify you when accessibility options are selected. Another thing to try is another keyboard. You might have some stuck or worn keys on the old one. Try cleaning it by turning over and tapping gently.
