How to install Sigmatel XP driver in Inspiron 1525

SolTec provides a link to Lenovo UAA patches in message 10. They are for "systems running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 configured with High Definition audio or modem". His method worked for himself and another 1525 owner.

For the link in SolTec's message #9, try reading this Microsoft article 888111. It contains a link to where you request the file from Microsoft. MS has cut off the direct link to the file. If my link below doesn't work then type the address into your web browser.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/888111

The link in SolTec's message #10 should still work. If not, try pasting this address into your web browser.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-65456

Download the exe file in the appropriate language. Look at the paired read-me file for instructions and additional information.

Re order of installation, before installing the Sigmatel R153908 audio driver you are supposed to install the Intel Mobile Chipset driver and restart. So maybe this order:

a. Chipset driver. Restart.

b. UAA driver. Restart.

c. Sigmatel driver R153908.

Another poster gave us this tip about the R153908 driver. "After you install the latest audio driver (R153908) and run it, don't immediately restart.  Go into the c:\dell\drivers\r153908\wdm directory and run suhlp.exe.  Then your SigmaTel audio will be detected and run properly." -- posted by quandtj

I don't think he installed the UAA at all, but he had a different computer model.

But Soltec did it a completely different way. I found this thread where he listed exactly what he did, in the order he did it.

I had saved 2 ways to install an XP audio driver in the 1720. The 'old' way is from posts by 1720 owners and it worked for them so you might try that.

===============================================================================

New way:

a. Install the Intel Mobile Chipset driver R153997 (click the + sign next to Chipset). Restart.

b. Install the Sigmatel audio driver R171789 (click the + sign next to Audio).

Download these from:
1720 XP downloads page

===========================================================================

The old way before the R171789 was released in December:

Several posters have gotten the Sigmatel R153908 audio driver to work on their 1720's. Install these drivers from the Latitude D830, following this order of installation:

a. Install Dell Notebook System Software (click the + sign next to System Utilities). Restart. If this won't install skip it.

b. Next install the Intel Mobile Chipset driver R153997 (click the + sign next to Chipset). Restart.

c. Finally install the Sigmatel audio driver R153908 (click the + sign next to Audio, then click on Sigmatel. When you get to its page click on "other versions". Select the 1st one ).

Download from:
D830 XP downloads page

A poster named quandtj D830 had a problem with the Sigmatel R153908. Here is what he wrote: "After reloading XP on this computer, I initially couldn't get the SigmaTel audio to work. The problem is with the Windows Audio service. After you install the latest audio driver (R153908) and run it, don't immediately restart. Go into the c:\dell\drivers\r153908\wdm directory and run suhlp.exe. Then your SigmaTel audio will be detected and run properly."

Rarely there will still be a problem with the installation at this point (in XP). In those cases follow this tip from forum member rpilT2005: check in the Device Manager for a "PCI Device" with a yellow question mark next to it, under the "System Devices" grouping. Hit 'update driver' on that one, and it should find the driver. A poster named  anonymousguy got this driver to work on a 1720 after following this tip.

Thanks jim for your reply,

I did the job but it's still the same problem:

The Sigmatel Audio is working fine except the modem.

I always get the same yellow question mark for the modem device on HD Audio Bus and when I try to install the pilot for that modem I get an error : unable to install the pilot

Any Idea on what I could do?

I'm not familiar with the word 'pilot' in this context, "unable to install the pilot". Do you get the error message when you click on 'update driver'?

Try removing the Sigmatel driver from Add/Remove in the Control Panel. Then try to install the modem driver before reinstalling the Sigmatel.

HI Jim,

sorry, pilot in french is the same meaning as driver in english

I did your suggestion but it's still the same result....

As we say in french <<<< the duck is still alive!!!!

Just a question what does the problem means?

the modem is not operative or I will never get a sound on that modem??

Regards,

JPP,

"Just a question what does the problem means?"

I don't know the answer. Have you tried to use the modem?
