Problems after installing a new hard drive
Hi, I hope someone can help, i've been trawling the intertubes for days. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 64 bit SP1. Recently I cloned my old original SATA hard drive for a larger Seagate (600Gb). All is fin apart from no windows update and an annoying request to activate. When i try to update I get a message that my service isn't running and I need to re-boot. It is running and a re-boot makes no difference. In System properties the laptop says it is activated but Windows thinks otherwise. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi chrisannesam,
Please confirm if the system came pre-installed with Windows 7 from the factory. If not, share which source of media you used to install the Windows 7.
You may run the Windows Update troubleshooter from the link http://bit.ly/WLj85s to problems with Windows Update.
To check whether the services are running, follow these steps:
If the service for Windows Update is running, but the service still fails to check for updates, click the link http://bit.ly/l2QQ5 to go to the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base for support.
To start the Windows Update service manually, follow these steps:
You may also refer to the link http://bit.ly/9KVjys to reset the Windows Update components.
Also, in regards to the Windows Activation query, please refer to the link http://bit.ly/10tclk2.
Hope this helps. Please share the results.

Thanks for your reply Saharsh. I am running a pre-installed DELL OS. I ahve the keys and disks etc. I already trawled Windows for help and got no where. I tried both your links and ran FixIt but still no Windows Update. Both the services you asked me to check are running. If I run net start bits from CMD I get the error 'system error 5 has occured. Access is denied'. I reset the Windows update components and reset the Activation slic. No change.
The only people who managed to recover from this in other fora updated the Intel Rapid Storage driver. However, if I go to intel to do this it says that i cannot as it's a Dell machine I must contact Dell.
Any further ideas?

Hi chrisannesam,
Thank you for sharing the information.
I recommend that you reinstall the Windows 7 on the new hard drive using the installation media. As the system was in healthy state when you cloned the hard drive, so usually there should not be any issue with Windows Updates. But seems that there has been some issues/error caused during the cloning process.
Steps on how to install Windows 7 are on the link http://dell.to/15VrDxa. Also, for driver click the link http://dell.to/XyrgGq. Enter the Service Tag of the computer and choose the Operating System installed on the computer (32-bit or 64-bit). Please update the latest version drivers available.
Please share the results.

Thank you for replying again but this answer is not acceptable. It does not get to the cause of the problem which is likely to be quite simple as other people have found. Does the Dell Inspiron 1545 have an Intel Rapid Storage driver? If so, that is where I would like to focus.

No, it doesn't use Rapid Storage - the hardware doesn't support it.
