Problems with Biometrics FingerPrint Reader using Windows 7

Hi:

I have a XPS M1530 (1.5 years old) with a Biometric FingerPrint Reader. I just installed Windows 7 (Home Premium version) and this has problems recognizing and connecting it. I re-installed FINGER PRINTREADER SUITE several times but Windows 7 still does not recognize it. Everytime I start my system a message appears:

FINGERPRINT READER IS NOT CONNECTED. PLEASE, CONNECT THE READER TO A USB

Please, does anybody can help me? I will really appreciate any assistance in this problem. Thanks a lot

Had the same problem had to play around first to find it.  Go to the Control Panel and select Hardware and Sound.  Go down to the Biometrics device option and below it you will find: Use your Fingerprint with Windows and follow the steps to set it up.

Hint: When the window pops up with the Biometric Enrollment enter your password and select OK. The rest is self-explanatory.

You don't need the Vista Fingerprint Software Suite application.  If Windows 7 has loaded the driver for your reader, go to control panels and look for the Biometric Scanner applet.  From there you can turn it on and off as MisterV talks about and enroll your fingerprints.  I found it less forgiving than in Vista but if I wet my finger first, the swipes read well.

Thanks for that advice it was amazing to be able to find this so quickly. It worked wonderfully. Also, you can download the UPEK software for windows 7 32 bit, or if you have 64 bit then just download the vista 64 bit and it works for me. That's up to you. You may prefer the built-in software from 7, but I kinda like the software that comes from Dell. You can download that software at www.dell.com/support - click drivers/downloads, type in your service tag, and look under "security" after selecting your OS.

It worked.  That's more than I can say about the 355 bluetooth module and a blackberry 9650.

Well I'm about ready to throw my Studio 1737 out the window.  I've tried over and over to get mine to work and simply just can't.  I have the Dell Apps DVD which has the drivers but it only shows XP and Vista.  I  have Win 7 x64 and have tried in every way, shape or form and just can't get it to work.  I do find the Biometric options in my Control Panel but it tells me that no device is found yet it is built-in on my laptop.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

You may have done this already but just to be sure; have you tried accessing the BIOS on start up to make sure that the Biometrics device is turned on and working?

If you have just installed Windows 8:

1. Open the Control Panel (see Note 1) and select "Biometric devices".

2. Click "Use your fingerprint with Windows"

3. Download "TrueSuite Starter"  (if you opt for TrueSuite Premium" you are told it is not available for Win 8 in Aug 2013)

4. Click "Run" (or "Save" then "Run").

5. At the User Account Control warning, click "Next" then "Next" then "Continue"

6. After the "AuthenTec TrueSuite" application launches, click "Yes" to the question "Have you found your fingerprint sensor"

7. Click "Yes" to the question "Are you ready to enroll"

From here, follow the very graphic instructions about "enrolling fingers".  I suggest you enroll your first and second fingers from each hand,  and at least two fingers from each other user that you want to enroll in your current account.  You need to swipe each finger up to 6 times.  If you are having trouble, lick your finger.  Use long slow strokes from below the first knuckle to the tip, and remember that some older readers are not as sensitive, so be patient (no, concentrate ...).  .

Then enter your profile information, and explore the "TrueSuite" application while it is open (see Note 2).

Note 1:  To find the Control Panel on Windows 8 from the Start Panel, mouse to bottom right, click "Search" (the magnifying glass).  Dismiss the Search Panel itself, then scroll all the way right to "Windows System".  Right click and select "Pin To Start" and "Pin To Taskbar" to make your life easier.

Note 2: For "AuthenTec TrueSuite" read the following statement from their web site:

Support for AuthenTec Product

AuthenTec Customer Support is now 100% Self Service.   We are unable to respond to emails or phone calls. This site will be updated only if a critical product issue is identified. For answers to your Support questions, please carefully review the FAQs, Knowledge Base and User Forum.  The User Forum is no longer moderated or monitored.

Note 3:  I recommend that you update your BIOS (BInary Operating System).  This is the "firmware" stored on your motherboard that allows your PC to launch your operating system, amongst many other tasks which you can find in the BIOS setup screens.

- Go to www.Dell.com, select Support then Product Support.

- Enter your Service Tag.

- Select "Drivers and Downloads"

- Scroll down to "BIOS", download and install the latest BIOS for your PC (follow the directions).
