Problems with Midi controllers and sound in general....
Laptop model: Studio 1558
bought aproximately 3/4 months ago...
------
Ok... So I bought this laptop for the main purpose of producing music on instead of an applemac pro. Using programs such as Fruity Loops and Ableton Live etc.
Which is all good, the programs do work... but there are 2 main problems I am having.
1. The midi controllers do not work with the laptop.
Now I don't know if this is a problem with the laptop or with windows 7 but it just does not work. I have made sure that the midi controllers are set up correctly and that I have the correct drivers installed for windows 7... the programs recognise the keyboards but when I press the keys / pads no message is sent to the DAW that I am using... I have tried them on my applemac g5 and they work fine so it is not the keyboards that are the problem either.
I've spent an additional £500 on these so am actually quite frustrated that they won't work
2. The laptop overheats quite a lot which causes the sound to be very distorted... I've bought a laptop cooler which helps but I still have the same problem after prolonged use... as you can imagine is quite annoying when I am trying to work.
With the laptop being named 'studio' I thought these were the kind of problems that I would be avoiding. Anyway, I hope you can help me find a solution for this because otherwise I will have to sell the laptop on and invest even more money into my choice of study and do what I really did not want to do and purchase a desktop or the applemac pro...
Thankyou for taking the time to read,
Kevin. :)

Kevin, doesn't the manufacturer have a web site with tech support and/or discussion boards? That is where I would go for help. I can't think of a reason why the laptop itself -- the hardware -- would be the reason for the lack of communication between the controllers and the applications. I mean, assuming that these are usb controllers, if the usb ports were not working I would think that you would notice it with other usb devices. Of course you have probably tried in each usb port on the laptop.
I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the laptop is at fault but I cannot think of a specific scenario. The folks at the manufacturer's website surely would be aware of the kind of behavior you have described and would have some explanation for it. They mighthave a list of all computers that their product is not compatible with. They should be able to point you in the right direction.
You should call tech support about the overheating. It is not normal for it to get so hot when on a cooler that the sound distorts.
