Questions About Upgrading BIOS using Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 6400.

Hello,
My father owns a Dell Inspiron 6400 and is running Windows XP, but I want to use a newer OS like Windows Vista when the support for XP ends. The current BIOS version is A07, which doesn't support Windows Vista or higher. So I've planned to upgrade it using Ubuntu, because it's said that it's a lot safer than when upgrading it using Windows. But before upgrading the BIOS, I have some questions:
1. The battery is dead, is it required for a BIOS upgrade using Ubuntu?
2. Do I have to install Ubuntu to upgrade the BIOS or can I do it from the Ubuntu Live CD?
3. Will the BIOS be upgraded to the latest version or the version that was released after the one that I am currently running?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks. :)

It would probably be easier if you went onto the Dell website and dowloaded a piece of software that tells you what you need to update rather than doing it through ubuntu which is practicly impossible to remove once it is installed. Good luck.

Wait, I forgot to mention the guide I found to upgrade the BIOS using Ubuntu: wiki.ubuntu.com/DellBIOS

I am going to upgrade it from the Internet using Dell Packages. It tells you what you need to update.

Now what's left is the answer to my questions. :D
