RAM change in Inspiron 1520 does not show changes
My Laptop -Inspiron 1520, 32 bit came with 2GB of RAM and 160 GB of HD. The computer is now running really, really slow and I have only about 20GB of HDD left.
I checked out Dell's site to see what I need to do to upgrade and seeing the I can upgrade to 4GB of RAM and 750GB of HDD, I thought to do so.
First I checked in with Dell, gave them my S-tag and was told yes, I can upgrade to 4GB of RAM and 750 of HD.
Don't know what happened but I changed the RAM this morning from 2 x1GB to 2 x 2GB but on checking the computer says I have only 2GB of RAM installed.
Can anyone say why that is? I did some googling and youtubing and I seem to be getting the sense that I need a 64bit OS in order to have the 4GB show up. Still shouldn't the computer at least acknowledge the 4GB installed even if it cannot use it all?
Should I be updating BIOS and drivers? Haven't done so in a couple of years or more and I did see a number of updates including BIOS and driver's on Dell's site for the 1520.

Does the system setup (F2 at powerup) recognize the new RAM? If it doesn't, try each module one at a time -- if both work in one socket but not the other, though -- it's the socket that's bad.

All is well now!!
DIMMA beneath the keyboard was not seated properly.
I have to wonder who would think up a frustrating idea of putting a memory socket beneath a laptop, keyboard ugh!!
Anyway it is now reading 4GB.
thanks again.
. . . except is says 4.00 GB (3.49 GB usable) That would be because. . .?
