Power on, press F12 a few times and boot into the Dell diagnostics from the menu that appears. Run an extended test on the hard drive - if you see any errors, record the exact number (such as 2000-0142).
If the system is under warranty, report the error to Dell support and they'll replace the drive.
If the system is out of warranty, you'll need a new hard drive.
If you do not see any such errors, you should be in the clear.
i'm am not able to acess the dell diagnostics on startup, pressing F12 does nothing but make a red bar pop up at the bottof for a while in the loading screen, i am able to acess the setup with F2 but not the dell diagnostics with F12

The other way to get in is to hold the D key through powerup.
