Read failure on internal hard drive?
Hi,
I have an inspiron 6000 and recently reinstalled xp due to daily BSOD. Everything seemed fine until one day I turned it on and a screened popped up saying "Read failure on internal hard drive No bootable devices; Strike F1 to retry boot, Strike F2 for set up utility"
I went with F1 and upon reboot all of my personal files & photos were deleted, my dvd player would not work, several drives needed updating again, Live one care crashed 4-5 times until I updated it. I tried to open itunes but it said it need to be installed, even though it was still listed in add/remove programs...I can't remember what else had gone wrong.
Since then I uninstalled itunes, updated drivers, Live1Care, ran a chkdsk which found and fixed a problem. However I still can't get my dvd player to update; it keeps saying there is no dvd/cd found.
After doing some online research everything points to my hard drive; but a hard drive check showed no problems. I'm not sure what caused all of this and if I should reinstall the OS or if I have the beginning of hard drive failure. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks:-)

Run the extended hard drive diagnostics - f12 at powerup. DO NOT just rely on the quick check - run a full diagnostic (takes a couple of hours).

I ran the extended test and passed all tests. In device manager it still shows a missing dvd drive; but when i try to update it says no dvd device detected. When I put in a dvd/program I can hear it spinning but it doesn't pull up the dvd/program.
