Reboot after hibernate?
I have a new Inspiron 8600 and somehow have settings so that whenever laptop goes into hibernation it reboots when I wake it up...?
Any ideas ...?

Are you sure it's a cold reboot that it's doing? Your machine should power off when hibernated and then reboot when resumed. This is normal. When resumed, all apps that were active prior to hibernating should be open.

So after booting, all your programs are closed?
Does suspend work?

Roger that... I see a quick flash of a bios blue error screen, then the system reboots to a new session with all apps closed. Is there any diagnostics I can run?

How does your suspend work? On my 8600, if you plug in the power while it is suspended, it shuts down. Maybe your hibernate issue is related. Hibernate on my system works fine.
Rob
PS- The bios on these machines needs some work to say the least.

How much space have you got left on the HD?
Hibernation requires a lot of space to save all the settings open programs etc etc at the point where you left off...so's you can resume from exactly where you left off when you fire it up again. There have also been reported instances of where hibernate is invoked whilst the machine is hooked up to the Internet...the machine attempts to save the entire net! So disconnect from the Internet b4 hibernating unless you have a very very VERY big HDD!
If you have SYSTEM RESTORE enabled this can, over time consume a very large amount of disk space by default it is set to consume 12% of your hard drive space...adjust this by clicking the settings button from within the sys restore screen.(I have mine set at 3% which works for me)
Clean up your hard drive by emptying the History/Cookies/and Temp files...do a Google search for "Spider116" this little app will clean up all the stuff that XP intentionally misses (so's Uncle Bill can keep tabs on yer surfing habits)
Remove any CD's DVD's etc from the drives...an hibernation will attempt to save the entire contents of same!
If disk space isn't a concern then the chances are that some program or other is set to auto update or kick in periodically which is throwing a spanner into the hibernate works...make sure your AV etc is not set to auto update...check other apps for the same...DONT forget that even a lowly screensaver kicking in when hibernate is invoked can cause all manner of similar probs like you are experiencing.
If non of the above applies.....I'm stumped too!...perhaps it's time to ditch the puter and settle for a beaded abacus instead...at least there won't be any BATTERY PROBS WITH THAT!
