Requesting backup CDs for Windows XP on an Inspiron 6000
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop and wish to fit a larger hard disk, but the laptop came with Windows XP already installed without any CDs or DVD containing Windows XP. The Dell web-site at http://support.euro.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?docid=179256 and http://support.euro.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/document?docid=331556 indicate that a Windows XP media can be supplied on request. But when I follow the instructions to request it by email, entering a service tag as requested, it simply informs me that the warranty has expired and leaves me to either telephone at a cost of at least £19 or leave a question in this forum - hence this message.
Can I get Windows XP media from Dell? Alternatively how do I get Windows XP onto a new hard disk without buying another copy?
I'm reluctant to fit a larger hard disk until I am confident that I can get it to work without vast extra expense.

Try calling Customer Service (not Technical Support) in your location.
Note that the 6000 has a 120G limit on drive size in the BIOS - if you use a larger drive, you MUST partition it with a sub-120G first partition and install XP to that. You will lose data if you try to install XP to a partition larger than 120G or beyond the 120G limit.
Once XP is installed, you can create a second partition to use the rest of the space on the drive.

Thanks, I'll try them.
Thank you for the advice about the limit on drive size - I wasn't aware of that as a potential problem.

When Customer Service eventually replied all they did was to direct me to Technical Support (and the £19 minimum charge).
So it would appear that the only way is to buy the media - I wish they had made this clear on the Dell web-site instead of leading me to believe otherwise.
