Resizing screen settings

In my continuing saga to get my laptop set up after a hard drive replacement, I have the following problem: when I turn on the computer it will set up initially to my resolution 1200by800 pixels and then it resizes itself to 800 by 600. When I go to change the setting (which it does) it shows monitor 1 and monitor 2. Well, folks, its a laptop with 1 screen only. when I go into the device manager under video, it shows 3 adapters(if my memory is correct). What do I need to do to eliminate this problem? I thank you, in advance for your response.

1: What model of laptop do you have?
2: What model of video adapter do you have?

Answer those questions, and I, or someone else, can direct you to the correct links for the drivers etc.

Allan, I downloaded the drivers but nothing has changed. On the settings diplay for changing resolution pixels, should there be monitor 1 and monitor 2 (in the background showing). also, i kind of remember it happening just after I loaded the game Half Life 2 on my laptop which I can't seem to get to run. Also, I'm not even sure I downloaded the right drivers that you hyperlinked to me.

well, it's obvious i'm a computer nubie. Thanks for your help and appreciate any further assistance.

What version of Windows are you using?
Windows XP Home/Pro, Windows XP Media Centre or Windows Vista?
