SD Card Reader not working on Latitude E6420

I bought a refurbished Dell Latitude E6420. I had not tried the sd card reader till recently so I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I am part of the insider build community where I get new updates before they are released to the public. I am currently running Build16278.rs3
_release.170825-1441. So I tried my SD card for the first time. and it did not work. The sd card shows up under disk drives in the device manager and I have uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them with no change. The sd card reader also shows up in the device manager and I did the same with those drivers, so all of the drivers are the newest. When I insert the sd, it shows up as removable drive E and I get a message that it is unreadable and that it needs to be formatted. I put the sd card into another laptop and backed everything up and then tried to format it on the E6420 but it failed. The sd card shows up in disk management as well and I am not able to format it there either. I cannot rollback to a stable build, and am not sure this is even the reason I am having this problem.

Any thought's out there? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

P.S. - i posted in a Microsoft forum first but when i told them the SD card reader was internal they suggested I contact the manufacturer. Here is a link to that thread if you want to see the steps I have taken so far.

If the Dell tool doesn't pick up the SD card, I suggest you click on the link below and install the driver.

After checking or installing latest BIOS version:

In your Dell Product Support page - Latitude E6420), select windows 7, expand System Management and then install Dell Command | Update onto the system. I'm hoping the Dell utility pick up much needed windows 10 drivers for your system.

Thanks LSUFAN51 for your suggestions.

I already have the current bios installed and have also run dell command / update. Still nothing. Is there a way I can find out who the manufacturer of the sd  card reader is and contact them or should I just bite the bullet and buy an external reader?

I did a quick search to find the manufacture of the SD card reader but no luck. I did find a more updated card reader driver in the link below.

Unfortunately Dell doesn't support windows 10 for your system- Latitude E6420).

However, I'd suggest you update the System Setup(BIOS) to see if that will make any difference . Please follow instructions in the link below to safety install latest BIOS version.

I know this isn't an easy solution. The first thing I did was buy and external sd card reader. They are not very expensive but make sure, if you buy one, you buy one that has a cord so it doesn't block your other usb ports. After doing this though, I got a virus I couldn't remove and none of my system restore points worked. So I did a clean install, and lo and behold now my sd card reader works. Although, now my fingerprint scanner does not (which to me is no big deal because it never worked that well in the first place. But I think these are your two best options. And if you a worried about a clean install, I would make a backup using Macrium Reflect software. This way, you can image all of your partitions and if the clean install, you can use Macrium Reflect to restore your computer to it's former state before the clean install. Here a link to Macrium if you are interested [https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree]
