I've seen similar problems with various Flash Memory USB sticks. Some brand laptops (I'm comparing Dell and Thinkpad) I support at work will be able to read brand X USB sticks but if you plug the same USB stick in a different manufacturer's laptop, it won't work. And it seems to vary from model to model!

This problem also seems to occur with USB multi-function flash readers and camera flash memory. My el-cheapo no-name smartmedia card randomly can't read on my Dell M65 running Vista. When it stops reading it, I have to reboot the system. However the same reader and smartmedia memory works fine every time on my Thinkpad T41.

Try plugging your SanDisk device on another PC and see if it's readable. If it is, it's probably still good but you may be seeing what I've seen - some sort of incompatibility between that brand flash drive and your laptop.

I bought a Kingston USB flash drive that wouldn't work with my son's laptop (worked fine with both desktops).
Kingston said it was a timing issue with their flash drive, and replaced it.
I would call SanDisk and ask what they can do for you.
