Afternoon Art,

I assume you mean "no" I will not run into two machines having the dame Service Tag number.  But how do I determine the model number via the ST?

Thanks,

Don

Don,

A correct assumption.

I only base that on the fact that when you enter one of your service tags
it brings up a specific unit and all the details related to that unit.

My Dells are too far apart for me to see any 'code' to them. You, with
access to several closely related units are in a better position to
spot that relationship.

Thanks Art,

Yeah, I thought that I might have had a commonality with the ST's in regards to the make/model since the last number is a "1" but this apparently represents that it is manufactured in the U.S.  I was hoping that someone could post a breakdown of the ST and it's complete character representation - that would be sooooooooooo ohhhhhhhhhh useful :)  Aren't there any Dell forum administrators that I could post to directly? or email?  I really do not want to go through a half day phone call to get mis-information *not to knock the front line support guys since I have been there myself but with SD assistance it is always a drawn out process since anyone that has talent never stays at the helpdesk level - go figure LOL*

Thanks again Art... I will keep plugging away and perhaps make the phone call next week if I have too ;)

All service tags are assigned buy when the unit was ordered. If some one order a i6000 one second and some one else ordered a D810 the next these to units would have consecutive service tags. Although they may be assign by type, Latitude and or Inspiron but since there are several different models in both lines the same would hold true. D600 one second and then a D810 the next they would have consecutive STs reguardless of model.
