Should fan speed increase when idle?

Hi,

I just received my new latitide D810 (2Ghz cpu, 1GB ram and a Ati 128 mb X600 video card).
It seems to be a great machine, although I was a bit surprised about the noise it sometimes makes.

Even when the laptop has really nothing to do (running idle on a brand new windows xp installation), the fan on the right side (video card) intermittently turns on (about every 5 mins). Also the left cpu fan (which is continuously running - but that's normal) increases its speed sometimes during idle.
The laptop is always on a normal wooden desk.

Why is that? Is that normal? Is it because of the relatively high end hardware?

Kind regards,
Tom

What is the CPU usage like when its idle? If the CPU usage is high, you may have some spyware or something increasing the CPU usage. Does it happen straight from a cold boot, or after sometime. I'd say its most likely just doing its job keeping the CPU cool.

The laptop came right out of the box. There wasn't even any internet connection. It starts about 10 minutes after a cold boot. Cpu load is then about 2%.
