Slow Java 3D Graphic Rendering XPS 15 i7 second generation
I got my XPS 15 Notebook on March 21st, 2011. It is a second generation i7, NVIDIA GeForce GT 525 1GB graphics with Optimus, 4 GB ram, 15.6FGD TLF running windows-7 64 bit home edition.
I am runnig my Java 3D rendering program on the following desktop computer:
Intel (R) Xeon(R) CPU X3360 @2.83GHz (quad core) 2GB Ram, NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS, running Windows XP
The program is running fine on this desktop. No problem at all.
When I tried the program with my Notebook(XPS 15), it was so slow that I prefer to say it was not running at all. I did not change the Notebook default settings.
The program was also running faster on a dual core Desktop that I used to have.

I am sorry to read that your 3D rendering utility is running so slow on your XPS 15. Without more information on the exact renderer that you are using I don't know if I can be of much help, other than to suggest contacting the Software vendor and see if they are familiar with any compatibility issues.
Other than the Java 3D Rendering program how has the XPS been treating you? Has it been sluggish with other applications, are you able to view movies and play 3D games on it without issue? The reason I ask is I want to know if this is a possible hardware issue with the notebook, in which the system performs poorly regardless of what software is running, or is the issue limited to the one program?
You are likely already aware of them, but if you are concerned that there may be faulty hardware then I certainly suggest running diagnostics. The following link goes over the onboard tests with fair detail.

If you would like more help on the Java 3d Rendering program shoot us a new post that gives us the vendor name and version and they may be some posters that are familiar with the program and will be able to give more specific help.

One other thing that I can think of is that you might want to try setting up an optimus profile for the rendering program to make sure that the system kicks on the Nvidia GPU and doesnt try to render with the Intel integrated GPU.
To create a new profile for an application:
Give this a go and see if it helps improve performance.

I ran into the exact same error on my brand new XPS 15 and I found a fix. The fix suggests to me that it's a driver bug. If I have an external display connected and run a 3D game (minecraft), I get about 3 FPS (using a 256 HD texture pack). However, if I *start* the application without the external display connected I get 166 FPS. I can then re-connect the external display and the FPS stays at 166.
If I start the game with the external display connected, it will stay at 3 FPS.
I hope this helps and someone at Dell looks into this.
