Sound Requires 2 monitors

I have a dell xps1530 and it was working fine until i connected it to a tv as a second monitor and now it wont play sound with out a second monitor being attached.  I have been using the HDMI to a receiver and it was working until I tried to add a tv.  Does anyone have any ideas to get this fixed so I do not have to use my tv as a second monitor all of the time i want to have any sound?

When there is no sound from the speakers is there any through the headphone jack? If not, is "Speakers" the default playback device?

If not, go to Start>Control Panel>Sound>Playback tab. Make "Speakers/Headphones-- Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec" the default device. It might be a good idea to disable "HDMI Audio" while there.

The HDMI Audio FAQ does not address your problem but you might find some ideas there.

I am trying to get sound to play via HDMI so I can use my external speakers with out needing to connect to my TV but I will try what the HDMI Audio FAQ said.  It has a lot of tips. Thanks.
