Ssd caddy for Dell Inspirion N5110

Hi,

I am looking to buy a SSD caddy in order to replace the CD ROM of my N5110.

I have read that for some people there are problems to boot from the ssd drive.

What are the considerations?

How can I know if will work?

Thanks

If you want the SSD to be the boot device, you must remove the hard drive and replace it with the SSD.  Then mount the hard drive in the optical bay caddy.

You cannot boot the system from a hard drive or SSD that's installed in the optical bay caddy.

Hi,

Thanks for the replay.

I have seen previous threads on this orum and the internet thatsome people where able to.

Are you sure?

Why can't I simply change the boot order to be CD ROM first?

As you must no it is very complicated to disassemble this laptop....

It is, but my HDD currentley is 5400RPM and the other specs are low as well, which means its a pain.

As far as I know the optical drive uses SATA 2, right?

If so I will buy a cheap SSD just for the OS, for all other things I will use the other HDD.

Hi,

I think I have found a solution.

If there will be a problem to boot using the 2nd SSD, it is possible to use grub inorder to start booting into the main HDD, and then transfer control to the SSD.

What do you think about this?

Assuming you're willing to set up the system this way, it should work - that said, the optical drive bay will limit the speed of the SSD, if that's a consideration.
