Everything is pointing to a dying keyboard/loose connector. Lay the laptop completly flat, open the lid ALL THE WAY THAT IT'LL GO and with a flat head screwdriver, remove the blue button panel that says INSPIRON | 1100. You will see 4 itsy bitty screws that hold the keyboard in. Remove these. Gently lift the back of the keyboard towards you. It Should look like a triangle from the base to the monitor. Check the connector under the keyboard. If it is OK, look for a new keyboard (P/n 5x486) and that should do it.

Thanks for the updates but I do not (sorry did not) have any issues with the keyboard.

Sometime back I realized that, END Key is not working. I started testing the keyboard and realised that few more keya are not working ...

1 Fn + End (Mute)
2 Fn + Volume UP etc.

Are these problems becasue of the keyboard is going to die soon?

:(

The far right side may be faulty, or even the FN key. You are looking at a new keyboard, $20 at  most on eBay, $40 from Dell new.

Thanks for the updates again but I still doubt whether there is any fault with my kboard.

See this ...

1. Home Button works but not Ctl + Home ?

2. Below home button, there is Page Up and Page down, they work but not End which is below Page Down.

Again, this laptop is just 1.75 years old and I dont think that is the age to die!

Anyway, my original issue is still unanswered.

Any updated fellows!?

Vilas,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

I am not sure that I completely understand the original problem, with playing DVDs.  Does the mouse cursor jump to END, or is it that the movie goes directly to end?  If the later, then try reinstalling the DVD software.

Fn+End, and Fn+Arrow Up and Down (Mute, and Volume up and down) will only work if the correct audio driver is installed.  The audio driver included with Windows XP will work with the sound card, but not with these controls.  You can download the sound drivers from Product Support/Downloads, at the top of the page.

You may want to run the mouse, and keyboard tests from the Dell Diagnostics to see if there is any problem with the hardware.

Hi-

Thanks for the response. The issue is not with the DVD only but with all the applications. Whatever I open goes to END (OF FILE)!

Now further to this problem, situation has changed now.

Now my cursor problem has gone but my END button is not working at all. Volume down works but not the volume up button. I don't think it is sound driver problem. Looks like some hardware issue.

As I mentioned earlier, my computer make loud beeping noise while booting. I guess this is due to some issues with the keyboard and END button remains PRESSED during the bootup. Since this button is in pressed mode, computer starts giving beeping noise.

When it loads completely (and since END button was in pressed mode) cursor used to go to END (as if you have kept END button pressed).

Afterward my END button stopped working but still it is remained pressed so computer has started giving BEEPing noise during the startup. Since END button does not work now cursor problem has gone.

This is all my guess but is it possible problem? Any way to fix?

This has started all of a sudden and nothing to do with any software, virus, spyware of computer damage! I can assure you that!!

Any "valuable and logical" help will be appreciated!

And in the end...... :smileymad:

Everything is alright after I had to replace the keyboard!

Not sure that was the only solution but it worked!
