Studio 1537 Fan not working.

Question

I've had my Dell Studio 1537 for around 2 years now and now that the warranty's ended the problems begin.   My main problem is that the fan just does not work, it doesn't move, rotate nothing. Meaning that my laptop will get ridiculously hot (as in I'm 97% sure it could boil water). On quite a few occasions my laptop has just switched off with no warning (not good when your half way through an essay!) Is there anything that could be done to get the fan working? I'm not having fun constantly putting my laptop in very cold area's of my house just to keep it from overheating. Next problem... does anyone know why the dvd drive randomly eject discs? You should stop using the system until you replace the fan, or you risk turning a $30 repair into $300 or more:

The DVD issue could be hardware or software.
