Studio 1555 wont boot AND keyboard unresponsive!!
Hi Everyone,
I'm desperate need of help and Dell Support is closed and I am at my witts end!!!
My laptop is only 2 months old and just will not work.
Last night I opened my laptop to wake it from standby. I typed in my password and it advised it was incorrect. I then realised some of my keys were not working. I then restarted the computer and got to the password stage but then the whole keyboard was unresponsive.
I then dusted off my 7 year old laptop from the cupboard and started googling solutions, so heres what I have done so far.
- First, unplugged the AC power and removed battery, held power button for a few seconds then replaced battery and AC power and pressed power. Laptop would not turn on at all.
- Removed battery and AC power again replaced battery and powered on with AC power and computer did turn on but will not go pass Dell Screen. The status bar loads til the end but then doesn't go anywhere.
- Turned off and on many times while pressing F12, F8, F2, Fn a combination of these but keyboard is still unresponsive so does not work.
- I do not have a USB keyboard so unable to try this option.
- Next tip was to load with Drivers disk that come with the laptop inserted but also no luck. You can hear that the disk is trying to read but stops. I then could not eject the disk as again keyboard unresponsive.
I then gave up and left it overnight.
- I tried to turn on the next morning (disk still in drive) but same thing, stalls on Dell screen and keyboard not working.
- Left for an hour or so and thought I would give it one last try and low and behold Vista loaded! I got to the password stage and (with help from yet another forum) I got up the on screen keyboard as still keyboard is not working. I disabled the password then logged onto dell and downloaded the latest BIOS update which was also recommended.
- Went to install and recieved errors regarding administration access but adjusted some settings and restarted and fix this. Then after the first few steps to "flash" the BIOS (i am no expert so don't understand this terms) and then I get an error saying it is "unflashable" with error code: 5. I found this on a forum here saying that is not the "flashing" thats the problem that it refers to the battery or AC power. In the botttom right corner there was a red cross through the battery meter advising battery not detected. I unplugged the AC power and computer kept running off the battery power.
- So I shut down and took the battery out and back in to see if this would make it detectable and turned back on but is now freezing at the Dell screen again!!!
At this point i'm ready to throw it out the window.
- So tried all of the above again but nothing happens and still no keyboard and unable to eject drivers disk!!!
- Lastly I tried another troubleshooting guide from Dell the got me to take out the battery turn on without it (didn't work) press power and function at the same time, put battery back in etc etc etc. Blue LED light appears on AC power cord and white light appears on laptop to indicate charging so it is receiving power.
- Stopped at the step where is asks to open up the laptop and remove RAM etc as I do not have the tools and am not confident nor compedent to do so.
So I am now staring at the Dell logo hoping something will happen but of course it is not.
The screen has now gone blank and is beeping rapidly!! The AC power was not connected and the laptop power light went orange so could have been a battery issue. If I plugg in AC power the white charging light reappears and laptop turns back on without beeping but is still frozen.
I am utterly desperate and need any help I can get!!
I also had to retype this whole post because by lovely 7 year old laptop turned itself off right when I was finished hence purchasing the new Dell, but still it seems to be functioning better as never had this issues......
Thanks In Advance!!!
****I forgot to mention I am using Vista 64 bit and have nit had any new devices or RAM or anything installed.****

REMur,
Did you recently add and new hardware or update any drivers?
Shutdown the computer. Unplug it from the ac adapter. Remove the battery and press the power button for 30 seconds. Put the battery back in. Does the computer startup?
You could restart your computer and try tapping F8 and try entering the safe mode. If you get in that way, then try start, all programs, accessories, right click on the command prompt, left click run as administrator. Type
chkdsk /r (space between the k and /)
Hit enter. Answer with a y, then restart your computer. Let chkdsk run until you see the login screen.

Thanks Rick
I have not installed any hardware or driver updates since I received the computer 2 months ago.
I tried updating the BIOS today but got the errors I mentioned above.
Keyboard is 100% not responsive so cannot press any buttons to get in to set up or safe mode or anything.
I can't even eject the disk.
The computer does power up but wont go past the Dell screen.
Thanks Again

REMur,
Taking the battery out and with no adapter, pressing the power buttons did not reset anything?
I guess you cannot tap F8 at startup.
Can you get the operating system disk in and try startup repair or system recovery.
What about your Waranty?

No it didn't. I think I have possibley removed the battery about 20 times now and tried press the power button but nothing changes.
The drivers disk mentioned above is in the CD drive and as keyboard is unresponsive cannot eject to insert a different disk.

Hi
My keyboard, too, is not working.
I currently have the Dell Studio 1555.
I was new, out of the box and I just opened and turned it on today. I have adequate knowledge of computers but this issues has dumbfounded me.
Everything else works, mouse, internet, etc. just not the keyboard.
I had some trouble finding the well hidden power button on the side so I thought there might be one for the keyboard. None.
Can someone help me?
More than the basic restart your PC for x minutes and start again.
Thanks

Even I have same these probs
I have Dell studio 1555
Finally I gave for servoce they replaced system board for 20$ finally again I am facing """0% available Plugged in not charging """ problem
and even now the probs are still unresolved
My question to Dell is that
Is there any FUSE on the System board to avoid AC charger high voltage out puts ?
similarly if AC charger output is low then why there is no solution for this ? inside the charger itself ?
