According to the "datasheet" above the original power adapter for the Studio 1558 can deliver up to 90W which would match the wattage of your replacement PA-10 adapter.
Connect the power adapter to the laptop and press F2 at powerup and make sure that the adapter is properly listed.If not the battery won't be charged and system performance reduced.
==================================
Why do you think the original power adapter has failed ?
I have connected the PA-10 adapter and it appears to be operating normally and recharging the battery.
I have no ideal why the original power adapter has failed. The laptop is my wifes who 99% of the time has it at permanently connected at a desk for occasional use for internet and emails. We recently took the laptop away on holidays and used it once on battery power to check emails. The power adapter was packed away whilst travelling and failed when the laptop was set up again at home on our return.
Thanks for your help. I will continue to use the PA-10 adapter unless there is any reason provided that I should not.

Hi Bomberal,
Please check the below table for the specifications of AC-Adapter for Studio 1558.
The AC-Adapter can be used if it qualifies the requirement shown in the table.
Please check and reply for any further help.

Which specific "requirement shown in the table" are you referring to?
I do not have the specifications for the alternate AC PA-10 adapter other than it is a 90w AC Adapter
