[Studio 1558] CPU upgrade fail...

Dear

I bought i7-720qm from ebay and tried to upgrade my Studio 1558 laptop from i5-430M. When I finished to replace i5 with i7, something was wrong... Power led at power button flicked in short time and laptop did not work when power was applied using adpater and pushed power button.

Now, laptop does not work any more!!! even though battery power, adapter power or both powers are applied!! So, I decided to recover to i5 CPU but nothing happened..  Is motherboard burnt? Can I reuse i7-720 qm? and is there any problem on i5 cpu? I removed all parts on motherboard and connected power adapter but power led was not turned on.

 Please help me!!!!

 System info.

 Model: Studio 1558

 Motherboard: 04DKNR

 CPU upgrade: i5-430M -> i7-720QM (fail!!!)

PS. Does Lattitude E6510 accept  i5-430M on its motherboard?

 Thanks in advance!

Hi YOONPOWER,

Welcome to Dell community,

I am sorry to hear that the system is not posting now.

We here at Dell do not recommend the processor upgrade as when the notebooks and desktops are designed the optimum design was kept in mind.

So, the parts which were installed while building the computers has an optimum design.  The optimal designs allow parameters to be estimated without bias and with minimum-variance.

Processor and motherboards are the components which when changed can alter the design and may result in no POST situations. This has happened here.

Please do NOT try that on any dell system which is under warranty as it will void the system warranty.

Glad to be of assistance.

Systems that ship with i5s will not take i7 CPUs.  Those systems that shipped with i7 CPUs used a different mainboard from the ones that shipped with i5 or i3 CPUs.

Re-trace your steps.  REmove the battery, unplug the system, and double check that the original CPU is installed and securely locked down - if it''s not locked down, the system will not power on.

I don't think there is any master list to know which boards can take i7s and which cannot.

Look on EBay for someone selling an i7-based system and ask what the mainboard part number is.

First of all, DO NOT try to change the CPU on your own without knowing how CPUs and motherboards work. First make sure that you have installed the i5 correctly, remove it and reinstall it securely. The motherboard as a whole won’t be burnt, but since an i7 requires more power, it might’ve damaged some fuses or components on the board by pulling current. Take and multi-meter and look for damaged components. About the motherboards supporting i7, you have to check the exact specifications of each of the motherboards as even the same model sometimes don’t support the same processor.
