Studio 1558 charging issues.

I had my Dell Studio 1558 plugged in and charging and went into full-screen to watch a video. After the video ended and I exited full screen I noticed that despite still being plugged in the battery was no longer charging but here's the thing. As long as it stays plugged it the battery will stay at the same percent and it will tell me how many hours I have left (currently at 6% and 143 hours). So it seems that it is just discharging at a very slow rate. Every time I shut down or hibernate/sleep etc. it will lose a few hours from its battery life. I thought it was the battery so I got a new one but that didn't fix the problem. I thought it was the charger so I tried to power up the laptop without the battery and it still worked. I'm not convinced that it's not the charger yet as I had to replace my original charger with a generic brand but I don't want to buy another one if I don't have to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Very few aftermarket adapters will charge the battery.  Check the BIOS setup (F2 at powerup).  If the adapter shows as unknown, the battery won't charge.  If that's the case, first try a new Dell OEM (NOT aftermarket) adapter.  If that dosn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack:

And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.

This might also be a Firmware issue (Surface Pro had this exact issue due to firmware).

It is worth a try before shelling out for a new charger.

I am pretty sure that the problem is due to that generic charger you are using but still let us try something

Shut down your laptop

Take out the battery

Switch it on and open device manager

Under the batteries tab right click and uninstall each driver(There may be 2 or 3 drivers)

Shut down again

Insert the battery and start it again.

Go to device manager and scan for changes in hardware.

If this method works then its good and if not try using some another charger of 90 Watts and if its charging with an another charger you may had to buy a new one,
