Since the system is shutting down please run the PSA hardware diagnostics to check if the hardware is working as designed. To run the PSA diagnostics please follow the steps below.
Turn the computer off >restart the computer
At the Dell logo screen, start tapping the F12 key a few times until you see the ‘One Time Boot Menu’ appear.
At the one time boot menu, press the down arrow key to highlight ‘Diagnostic’, and then press Enter to begin the PSA diagnostics.
If the test fails, please make a note of any error codes listed
Other than memory issue system shuts down most of the time when it is overheating. So please clean the fan air vents using a can of compressed air.
In case the system is not getting heated up or there are no heating issues in the system, then the heat sink in your computer may not be seated properly on the processor. So please check the system heat sink or the fan.
thank you for your reply. I donl't think this problem is caused by overheating. This problem occurs during a recovery and when I perform a RAM test. The laptop can run the whole day and longer without shutting down.
I run the test you recommended with several different configurations. The diagnostic routine shows an error during the RAM Test and sometimes the compter swiched off during RAM test. In every test configuration the error is the same:
Somtimes this message appears once an sometimes several times.
First I run the test with both 4 GB modules. The first part of the test runs without error. Then during "the remaining memory tests" the error ocurs several times.
Then I took a 4 GB RAM Modul with the same technical data out of my netbook. With the module placed in the lower RAM Slot no error occures. When I placed this module in the upper RAM slot the laptop switched off during the remainig RAM tests.
Then I run single tests with both of the other 4 GB RAM modules with the following results: One RAM module works without error in the lower slot and with the error described above in the upper slot. The other RAM module shows the error in both slots.
When I run the memtest86 V4,20 with both RAM modules in my netbook no error occurs.
My opinon is, that the cause of this error and the shut off of the laptop lies within the motherboard.
Based on your post, I understand that both the memory is working fine in the lower slot, when you install the memory in the upper slot it gives an error message. If yes, that means motherboard is faulty. I request you to send a private message with your system service tag, as I need to check a few more details.
