If the original battery will charge, and the system recognizes the AC adapter (i.e., it's not showing "unknown" in the BIOS setup - F2 at powerup) -- then the replacement battery is bad.  Have the supplier replace it.

Are these Dell batteries, or third-party?

Yes, Like I have said this is now the second battery I have purchased, both from completely different suppliers?

No, they are not DELL official batteries, but they are recognized.

I am experiencing EXACTLY the same problem. I've spent over $250 on 3 batteries and 3 chargers. My laptop now works ONLY when plugged into the charger, and the little battery light just keeps on blinking. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Dell batteries and adapters, or third-party?  Does the BIOS sense the AC adapter, or is it listed as "unknown"?

Hi juliflyer,

Welcome to Dell community forum.

I would like to know if you are facing the issue on the same system model.  The status of the battery can be identified in Dell battery meter. Dell battery meter will reflect in power options page. However this would only reflect if there is dell quickset software installed on the computer.

Kindly let me know the if “Dell Quickset” is installed on the computer .If not kindly install it from the below link:

www.dell.com/.../studio-1737

After installing the application check the status of the battery   by clicking on

Control panel → Power options→ Battery meter (on the left side of the pane).

Waiting to hear from you.

I gave up in the end after trying 4 new batteries and 2 new chargers, I am now running my origanal battery and charger, although it is all working find, just that stupid " your battery has ran out of life" warning to put up with, and the fact that it wont last more than 5 minutes on battery power:-)

My only other issue is that everytime I install a new battery Dells MediaDirect keeps trying to restart my system after every complete shut down.

I am not letting it go into hibination or sleep mode, I always shut down completely, and still this Media direct tries to boot it straight back up again.

I can get it to stop after fidelling with it, but if I change the battery it's a case of here we go again.

I will never buy a DELL again. the support is useless, and repairing a system more than 1 year old is just a joke price wise.

What DELL needs to learn is that under UK law ALL electrical items are due for a 5 FIVE year warenty not 1 year, and thats LAW!

Hi Nemesis44,

Thank you for your response.

If the laptop is purchased in UK, I would request you to contact UK technical support, based on the status of the warranty for the computer

Since I work for US Technical support department, my scope of support is limited for computers purchased in USA only.

I am sure that they would be able to help you with whatever you need as long as it is within the scope of support boundaries of dell hardware warranty agreement.

Below link would provide you the support numbers:

Well here I go again, my DELL official battery has now stopped working completely and I am now forced to use the substitute battery.

AGAIN, every time I shut down, MediaDirect flashes the lights on the STUDIO 1737 and it boots back up, not to mediadirect, but it boots to Vista?

I have tried everything to stop it rebooting, including stopping QUICKSET from launching on startup.

But  nothing stops it rebooting,, it's so frustrating.

I have flashed BIOS to latest version and still it reboots.

What I can't understand is I have never used MediaDirect and don't even know if it works?

Like I have mentioned, it just flashes the lights and reboots to Vista?

I don't really fancy formatting and removing the MediaDirect partition as I have heard it causes issues if you accidently pres the button and it loops because it can't find it anymore.

Can anyone please help?

This has really spoilt what was an excellent laptop to what is just an headache for me now.
