Swapping Graphics Cards

I plan on upgrading the graphics card in my Inspiron 8600 notebook.

After I have physically taken out the old 64MB NVIDIA GeForceTM FX Go5200 Go, and put in the new 128MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600 PRO Turbo, is there any software issues that I have to take care of? Will the notebook read my new hardware or will I have to download drivers for it?

You will need to download the ATi drivers for it.

should I do it ahead of time on disk, in case the screen dosen't show up? or will i still be able to see something on the screen?

I switched from an ATI 9000 to the ATI 9600 so maybe my driver issues will be different than yours.  When I turned my computer on after making the modification the screen looked fine but couldn't be changed to a resolution any higher than 1600x1200 and it operated slowly with a lot of choppiness on the windows.  The computer automatically found drivers for the ATI card (I'm not sure from where to be honest ) and installe dthem for me, it was very easy.

You wouldn't be able to install the drivers anyway if the screen doesn't turn on. It should turn on normally once you install the 9600, but uninstall Nvidia's driver before taking out the Nvidia card.
