System Restore Freezes and Have Google Redirect Virus

Hello. I would like to please ask for your help.

I have a Dell Inspiron 640m Laptop with Windows XP. I am using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes for Anti-Virus Protection.

I got a virus that redirects my Internet Explorer to various ad sites when I click on google search entries, or it opens new ad windows me ramdonly when I am using Internet Explorer. 

MalwareBytes and Microsoft Security Essentials were unable to clean this virus, which appeared initially as part of a "AV Protection" fake-anti-spyware virus. My MalwareBytes was generally able to remove to remove the "AV Protection" virus, but not the Google Redirect virus. I had the Google Redirect Virus in the past and spent alot of time with MalwareBytes Help technicians trying to fix it until I just had to give up and use System Restore to restore my computer to an earlier timepoint. This time I tried using System Restore with my regular username, but the virus was still around. It was at this point that I installed Malware Bytes, I believe.

So after installing MalwareBytes I tried to run System Restore again from a different savepoint. But this time the System Restore freezes 2/3 of the way through.

1. I booted my computer in safe mode, then chose to start Windows as "administrator" (instead of with my regular username like last time).

2. Next I chose System Restore, and the computer was performing the operation of "Restoring Files". It got two thirds of the way through "Restoring Files" at which point it froze. It has been frozed at this spot (2/3 completed) for the past 5 hours.

Can you please give me some advice about how to run System Restore all the way through?

Perhaps this is a problem with MalwareBytes, that maybe installing MalwareBytes now prevents System Restore from functioning?
