Hi M L Fish,

SMART indicates an imminent hard drive failure. Please back up the data from your computer. Running custom test on the hard drive will confirm its status. Follow the below mentioned steps to run the custom test:

  • Switch on the computer and tap F12 at Dell logo to enter the One-time boot menu.
  • Use up/down arrow keys to highlight “Diagnostics” and press enter.
  • Quick test will begin without waiting for user input, press ESC key to stop the quick test.
  • Select the “Hard Drive” and run a “Thorough” test (Refer the picture below).

Make a note of the error message if any after the diagnostics.

i've gone through the previous posts on the same topic but the problem seems to be persistent.. i got a dell inspiron 1545 service tag: 2J30YJ1, i ran a diagnostic on the drive and it showed a error message code 2000-0146 i.e error code 0146, hard drive 0. after going through the posts, scheduled a check disk for error and attempt to fix bad sectors. later on did defragmentation and disk clean up, after restarting it worked well for a few days and the blank screen reappears. i scheduled for a check disk, it runs well when a check disk is done but the blank screen appears when a check disk is not scheduled. i started a check up on the disk using dell support center software and it flags that the "targeted read test and SMART short self test" fails... please advice....

Hi inligben,

Based on the given description the hard drive has encountered a failure. Please back up important data from the hard drive.

I have checked the service tag. The warranty is inactive. I wish the warranty was active I could have arranged for the replacement of the hard drive. I apologize for the inconvenience.
