Testing Memory

When I test my Dell 128mb modules using DocMemory software, the modules pass if tested one at a time, if I test with both installed the program shows a failure. As soon as I take one out I get a good test.

I have checking because sometimes when both modules installed the machine detects memory errors at startup.

How can I determine which module is bad?

DC2X,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
It may not be the modules that are bad, but a memory controller or socket on your motherboard.
-Test both modules in another system, do you have the same problem?
-Test another set of modules in your system, do you have the same problem?
-Leave one module in the first memory socket, then see if you get any memory errors?
If not...
-Place that same module in the second socket, then see if you get any memory errors?
If not..
-Perform the same steps with the second memory module.

I have tested my computer using Dell diagnostics, (everything OK), and upgraded BIOS, and tested modules in both sockets. The computer works perfect with either module in it, yet if I test together I get errors, and of course 'blue screens' if I try to run both of them. Maybe I'll try to find a 256mb module and hope my system will run it.

DC,

It sounds like a bad memory controller on the motherboard.
The definitive test would be another set of modules.
If another "known good" set of modules does the same thing, you probably have a bad
memory socket or memory controller on the motherboard.
