The battery doesn't recharge while plugged in

The battery doesn't recharge while plugged in. The computer working when connected to the power connection while the battery is completely empty and not recharging. Occasionally, without any clear reason it starts to recharge and then again the "usual" message "plugged it, not charging" reappears and eventually the battery empties to "0". This has been happening for last 6 months. Please advice. Thanks

System model?  Age?  Age of battery?  Dell battery and adapter, or third party?

System model - Vista, Age 14months, Age of battery - 14months, but the problem exsists for last ~6months. Since sometimes battery does recharge most likely not the battery or adaptor problem but some software problems. I've heard that Vista has some issues of this kind?

If the system will charge when powered off, perhaps it's software - if it won't charge then, it's hardware.

In order, try a new Dell adapter, a new battery - and if that doesn't fix the problem, your system needs an internal repair.

My system is a precision m65, and I am getting the same issue.

Most of the time, the laptop can not detect the battery at all.  It will not charge at all, whether the laptop is running or not.

If it is off, the battery light flashes orange.

Then, for a few weeks, it charges fine.  It recognized the battery, charged it. I ran it unplugged to discharge the battery, and it re-charged it again.

Now, its back to its old ways.

I am pretty sure this is an internal issue., but is it something a fairly computer-savvy person can tackle on their own?  It seems like a loose connection somewhere.

Any ideas?
