Touchpad mouse is self clicking

How do I turn this thing off?  There must be a way, because this Dell Inspiron 8500 has only been doing this way for a week.  I've had it since the end of March.

Soluod,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Look in the BIOS for an option to turn off the touch-pad.  You may also be able to disable it if you remove the touch-pad drivers.

Dear BobT,

I have similar problem that I would like to correct.

When the cursor is left on top of a button (or a selection box) for a short period after movement made by using the keypad, the button was activated automatically as if I double click the left mouse button. So, I either have to move the cursor away from any button or have to keep moving the button to avoid the automatic selection (or activation). I tried to change the settings of the keypad such as the sensitivity but could not correct the problem. Please let me know if there is a way to turn off the automatic triggering feature. I do not want to disable the keypad. Thanks.

Ohres,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

You can adjust the keyboard sensitivity under the Keyboard entry in the Device Manager.  You can also adjust the sensitivity of the mouse in the Mouse entry in the Device Manager.

I tried it, but it didn't work.  So I reconnected my USB mouse, and am using it.  At least the mouse arrow doesn't do it.  All I saw in the BIOS was a PS-2 Mouse option, a serial mouse option, or a Touchpad/PS-2 mouse option.  (I'm not sure it said "PS-2," but something like that.

Dear BobT,

Thanks for your timely response.

I already tried those options such as lowering the sensitivity of the pad but still could not figure out on how to turn off the automatic triggering.

Thanks.

I have the same problem. As a matter of fact this is the second time I am typing this as my pointer decieded to click me away from what I was typing. Normally I use a port replicator and don't even notice that there is a problem, but this week is different. I have decieded to sit on the couch to do a little surfing and such. Every time I try and do something my curser selects things as if it has a mind of it's own. I load a page and take my hands off the keyboard before it even shows a picture. My pointer clicks almost imedatly after the page is finished loading. This is most annoying for those of you that want to do a little surfing. Is there a way to stop this. I have the A15 bios and the windows updates and driver updates that are necessary. I have tried everything I can think of. When I first purchased this machine it did the same thing and I reloaded windows xp with none of the dell stuff. I let xp do it all and that solved my problems I did not install tap tools but now it is acting like I did. Help !!!!!

This stinks I just had to figure out where I was typing and fix it as my curser jumped into the middle of the above paragraph. I have my curser located in the bottom left corner of this space and it jumped my curser into the middle of a paragraph without moving the pointer. Help !!!! im going nuts with this is there a fix? Will releading help? Please let me know, Tammy

Let me know when you let Tammy know too.  There must be a fix or workaround to this kind of mouse  behavior.

Tammy, it's driving me nuts too.  I don't like this mouse behavior.  Not even a little bit.

Please let me know as well when you let Tammy know.  I don't know what the rest of you arec using but I'm suffering with the (see?  There

s no such word as "arec... Dell...

Where's the rest of my post?

It may take Jesus to get help for all of us...

I have a not-quite three month old Discontinued Dell Dyslexic i2650 and a 2 inch pile of e-mails to and from so-called "support."  Why do they call it "support" when they want me to fix this lemon myself -- with a six year warranty, yet?

Now it wants to double space.  It wants to and did change fonts.  I'm a writer.  I'm a very, very angry writer.  I am also a grateful writer -- I'm a freelancer, so I don't have an editor breathing down my neck.

I contacted Logitech.  They couldn't help, although they tried hard.  Dell Knowledge Base suggested changes to a "touch pad" setting, but it wasn't there.  I don't use nor want to use the touchpad.  I don't even go near it.  I'm going to put the big roll of duct tape near the computer and see if it can be blocked that way -- sort of like the electric tape on the 12:00 blinking VCR.
Michael Dell should be ashamed of himself!

He said he is going to give away money -- he should review these forums and reimburse those of us who have selected his product only to be gravely disappointed when we got them!

And it just might snow at sea level here in beautiful Hawai`i!

Aloha,

RL

Sorry, I forgot to add that the Logitech optical mouse came with my sy -- lost cursor -- system and is a USB.  I'm using a port replicator and have tried every USB port in the house!  Also tried unplugging the mouse and trying to use the touchpad.  Yuk!  I like meeses.

Please don't ask me to unscrew anything or remove anything.  I am not qualified and will not do it.

BTW, Dell still hasn't agreed to make this right, even though the support guy at Dell writes that the phone logs bear out my entire tale of woe!

So much for award winning blah blah blah blah

I've noticed that too...supposedly the new ALPS driver was supposed to have fixed this, but NO GO.

hey RL

does you mouse have a ps2 converter on it? I run my machine with a port replicator to a 6 port switch box and everything is ps2. I have no problems when I'm docked as a matter of fact the only time I have a problem is when I am trying to do something semi importand and mobile and do not have time for the screw ups. Try the ps2 connection It works for me perhaps it will work for you, then perhaps you will be like me and only have a problem when you are trying to be mobile.

This sounds like a problem that other Inspirons 8x00 have as well.

-Run the Dell diagnostics and see if a hardware problem is located.

-The pointing stick nub between the g and h keys may be stuck - wiggle it a couple times

-Adjust the sensitivity of the mouse in the Mouse entry in the Device Manager. Drag the Touch Sensitivity towards Heavy Touch and the Palm Check towards Maximum.

-Disable the pointing stick for a few days, if the problem is gone the keyboard may need replacing or cables are not properly connected.
If the problem is not gone the palm rest unit may need replacing or cables are not properly connected.

I am currently experiencing the same with my insp 8000. Dell are sending me a replacement palm rest unit but I think it may be the keyboard...

I do not think it is the (Synaptics) drivers because the problem is also present on my i8000 using the standard W98 pointing stick/touchpad drivers...

At the moment I think it is a hardware proplem, so must Dell otherwise they would not be sending me replacement part(s). Some of the urls given above seem to indicate that a keyboard replacement resolves the problem, but read it for yourself...

Question:

Do Inspiron MODELS WITHOUT A POINTING STICK, who have only a touchpad, experience the ERRATIC MOUSE SELF CLICKING problem ???

( E.g. Inspiron 2500 etc... )

It probably is a hardware problem.  I put an optical usb mouse on my Dell 8500 laptop.  Problem solved, so long as I don't use the touch pad.  I have the pointing stick disabled.

Hello there soluod.

No offence, but disabeling the pointing stick and not using the touch pad is in my opinion not a solution acceptable to everybody.
The notebook design surely intended a working pointing stick and or touch pad without problems. If some want to use these functions on their investments then they should work correctly. For people who e.g. still have warranty it is in my opinion better to e.g. replace parts if that is causing the problems and solves the problems.

Best regards.

PS
An example,
the initial 8500s seem to have keyboards with a somewhat flexible design, thereby possibly causing problems not unheard of in this thread. Dell has designed a different one and as I understand from this forum is replacing the first editions. I can imagine that one (maybe you) would prefere to obtain and accept a replacement from Dell instead of continuing to drive a car with 3 wheels and accepting that it cannot take corners...
Apparently some people are thinking this way as well for the thread below has already 35 pages.

You know, it's a funny thing, but this melting laptop doesn't want to take me to your interesting hyperlinks about "Dell deleting messages" and the like...  I end up at the main Dell page!  Every Time I click!!! Are these moderators in India like the "award-winning technical support" people?
