Touchpad problems with Latitude C610

I have a laptop where the mouse moves by itself once you try to click on anything. I installed the old driver and the newest driver I could find and it worked fine until I took a CD out and put another in. Now it's back to it's old ways even though I reinstalled the driver.  Any ideas how to fix this?

Hi,

In a C610 the problem is normally caused by the pointer stick in the keyboard. Tap the top when it is good or bad and see if that changes things. With the latest driver you should be able to disable it. A new keyboard will fix it. The other option is to cut the cable to the pointer stick and insulate the ends. If you have a look you will find many Posts about this. If you still have warranty place a service call.

From the posts that I have seen this is a common problem. I had replaced the trackpad on my 3 year old laptop twice. The problem started cropping up after the machine had been in use for nearly 18 months. Since the machine was still under warranty the trackpad and the palm rest surface were replaced. The problems reappeared after six months. Though sporadic at first, within a few months the machine was unusable. By this time the machine had gone out of warranty (two weeks out of warranty). So, about a month ago I had the track pad replaced along with the palm surface. The parts and labor came to over $100. Within a day after the replacements, the problems reappeared. This time there was no "honeymoon" duration either! The machine is now back at the repair shop.
We have tried all of the remedies suggested in the various posts. None turned out to be useful. I do not know if this is a problem with Dell laptops only. I had used Apple laptops before and my wife still uses one (has been using it for longer time than the Dell) and yet these machines have not shown this problem.
I do not know if this problem will get fixed this time. If not, I am going back to a Powerbook.

Sreevatsalan,

Have you had the keyboard replaced ? You mention the palm-rest, but the keyboard is the normal cause. There is also a later version since the C610 was released. Try the latest driver and disable the touch-stick and touchpad one at a time to find which is the cause.
