Turning caps lock screen display off
Hi. I have a dell inspirion laptop. When I press caps lock, a message appears onscreen in the bottom right to tell me this. Lovely.
Only I want to turn this message off - it interrupts some programmes. I've been searching forums all over the place but can't seem to find an answer. please can someone help me?
Jim

James c007,
Since you didn't say your operating system, what you want to disable is baloon tips.

arghh sorry, my post was rubbish. the laptop has Vista, i think 64 bit (though may be wrong) and its definitely a manufacturer specific thing - my work laptop and others don't have this. you get the message 'CAPS ON' or 'CAPS OFF' in the bottom right of the screen and a small clip of a padlock with 'A' inside it that appears in the middle of the screen.
Its not hte balloon tips that you get on all PCs, its a thing I've only ever seen on this Dell laptop.

James c007,
Can you try hitting the windows key and then type osk and hit enter. If I'm correct, you should be able to see an on screen keyboard. Try to turn it off there.

Hi thanks, this does allow my to turn off and on the caps lock, but thats not the problem. the laptop works ok, just seems to have a dell-specific on-screen pop-up that I can't turn off.
I want to be able to stop the pop-up shown on this pic below (bottom right - the words 'caps lock om' and the picture of the lock) from appearing as it interrups some software i run which then crashes.
Any ideas?? please help!

Full disclaimer - this was strictly a Google exercise on my part. No warranty, no refunds.
But I'm seeing a lot of references to "bttray.exe", which is installed with Bluetooth drivers - either installed by Dell, or perhaps from another device.
Look in Task Manager for bttray.exe and end the process. If the pop-up disappears, you've found the culprit. However, actually fixing it is another matter - have come across some solutions but I'd best leave that to someone who knows more about Bluetooth drivers and what bttray.exe actually does than I do.

Hi Alexandra_p - this half worked! the CAPS LOCK text message has disappeared but not the picutre of the lock, which still interrupts other software. I tried ending the process of any tray things I could find in the processes (probably not so wise) but the lock picture still appears when I press CAPS LOCK.
Pudgey - its definitely a manufacturer-installed piece of code thats doing it, rather than a Word thing or anything else. Please DO keep suggesting things as its driving me mad!
Thanks both of you for your ideas.....any more??

Well, unless someone comes along with the magic bullet, looks like you're in for old fashioned detective work.
First work your way through the programs that automatically start and run in the background - many do not show up in the system tray or may not be recognizable in task manager. A guide to how to find and selectively disable startup programs below - with any luck, the bttray entry may point you to some Bluetooth program that could the ultimate culprit. But maybe not. Just be aware that some of those startup items you don't want to disable permanently, like your antivirus software.

A more drastic way of doing this is called "clean boot troubleshooting", described below, which includes disabling non-essential services.

James,
You showed an image with Microsoft Word, so it's somewhere in the settings. I use Open Office, so I cannot tell you the settings. I use Microsoft Word at work but I turned help off and hardley use the computer.
These people may ba able to help you. Sorry, it's a little out of my knowledge.

If this has not yet been solved, some people have resolved it by uninstalling Quickset, a Dell specific utility.
I have not confirmed if there is a way to disable the popup in Quickset without having to uninstall the whole program, but the uninstall does work.
You may want to poke around in Quickset setting before uninstalling it...

Hi Jim,
I had the opposite problem, in that I used to have the pop ups appear, but then they disappered. I had inadvertently removed the Dell Quickset program from my start up menu. Deliberately removing would seem to solve your problem.
If anyone did what I did, and wants to restore the status icons, just download the latest version of the Quickset program from www.support.dell.com
