USB 2.0 / Firewire PCI Card not recognized

System: Latitude C840, BIOS Rev A02, Windows XP Pro SP1, C-Dock II Expansion Station

I have installed an Adaptec AUA-3020 (which is an USB 2 - FireWire Combo PCI card) in the top PCI slot of the docking station.

After boot-up system does not recognize the new hardware, driver or software for USB card cannot be installed:

  • No error messages.
  • New card cannot be found in hardware device manager.

Questions:

  • Do I need special software for docking station? I assume XP should provide all necessary drivers.
  • Did I forget to change a partcular setting in the BIOS? If yes, which?
  • Do I need to upgrade the BIOS from A02 to A?? BIOS seems to work fine so far, I am a bit reluctant to upgrade.
  • Is there a hardware error (either the card or the docking station)? How do I detect this?
  • Is there a known incompatibility between USB 2 PCI card and docking station? If yes, any workaround?

Any idea would be highly appreciated.

Regards, Wern

Since the PCI slots in the docking station is on a secondary PCI bus,  some PCI cards will not work properly.  I have installed a Belkin USB 2.0 (5 port) PCI card in the top slot in my C-Dock II station and a Belkin IEEE1394A (3 port) PCI card in the lower slot in my docking station,  and both work great with my C840 under XP with SP1 (BIOS A12).  I have not yet tried booting with a DOS boot diskette,  but that is not a big deal for me as I can use my firewire HD externally on the notebook internal firewire port for making Ghost backup images...

I upgraded the BIOS to revision A12. Now the USB 2.0 PCI card is recognized. Everything works perfect. Thanks for the hint!
