USB Lexar Jump Drive does not work (128MB Flash Drive)

Question

I have a Lattitude C840 and when I plug in the Jump Drive directly it does not register.  No lights, no (new USB Device detected) nada.  I know the USB device works, because I can plug in a USB mouse and it works.  Also if I plug in a USB Hub (powered by a power supply) and I plug the USB hub into the USB port of the laptop and then plug the Jump Drive in the hub.  Lo and behold it works.  I am not running on battery and I do have the laptop power supply plugged in.  I am running Windows 2000 Professional.  What can I do to get it to work without the Hub, I don't want to have to lug the Hub around and what's the point of a laptop if I have to have a power source at all times (for the hub).

I have the same problem with my lexar 128Mb Jump Drive.. However, if I unplug it and replug back in it works fine ( so in a sense I have to plug my jump drive in twice to get it to work, kind of annoying) .. I am stumpted because so far I haven't have anyother problems like this with any other deivces.
