USB Mouse not working
Thanks in advance for your help,
I recently bought an Inspiron 5100 and a Logitech MX510 USB mouse and this question is probably a USB question more than anything, but I will explain the problem.
When I boot up the red Mouse laser underneath lights up to show it is getting power. I get past the Dell BIOS and the laser light turns off. I get into Windows and the mouse does not work at all. It is not detected by plug and play before or after I installed the Logitech Software.
I tried looking in the BIOS to see if I had to turn on USB ports (since they can drain power if left on) and found nothing other than a screen that said I have USB ports.
I looked under the Device Manager and under the USB and it says I have no devices attached (I don't even get an unknown device message).
I looked deeper in the "services.msc" and found that I could manually turn on the USB ports so I tried that and to no avail. It did tell me that both USB ports were not taking any power at all 0mb or something.
I tried a different Logitech mouse. One that I know works on my PC and still nothing happens.
I tried downloading up-to-date mouse drivers, but the ones on the CD were better.
Anyone have a solution? I truely love my Dell Inspiron, but playing games with the touchpad is getting a little annoying.

Feonyx,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
If your external mouse requires additional drivers, I would suspect that these drivers are conflicting with those for the touch-pad. You should remove the drivers for both pointing devices and then reinstall those for the pointing device that you wish to use.

Hi Feonyx - just wondering whether that worked - or whether you got the problem sorted? - I'm having the same problem...though with Microsoft USB Optical...
Thanks

I am having the same problem..see my post on page 1. I have uninstalled both drivers and reinstalled the touch pad driver(it reinstalls itself since it is always connected) but the problem persists. As you can see from my post Dell went as far as replacing the motherboard to no avail. All suggestions would be appreciated.

Sorry I didn't reply to this earlier...
I called up Dell tech support and the guy from India... I mean John... or whatever he called himself explained how to fix this problem. I'll explain it simply so any level of computer user can try it :).
1) Open Start Menu and open Settings.
2) Go to the "Control Panel".
3) Double click "System"
4) Click on the "Hardware Tab"
5) Click on "Device Manager"
6) Scroll down to the bottom and look for "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
7) Un-install ALL of them.
8) Reboot your computer.
Your Dell should now find "new hardware" and reinstall the USB drivers. While I had gotten close to uninstalling the USB drivers before in impatience the tech support guy said its okay to do so. Anyhoo the mouse works fine now.
On a side note. What the heck is Dell doing shipping laptops with wonky USB driver setup? I mean is USB really that new of a technology (sarcasm).
Oh well.. I still love my Dell :)
