USB Optical Mouse cuts in and out
I have an Inspiron 8200. At first everything was fine but for the last month or so I have been having a problem with my mouse. I purchased it with the computer from Dell; it is so branded.
Every so often the hd light will flicker, the hd will rattle, and the light on the mouse will go out. It is dead. Usually I will then get an error message that says the USB port is malfunctioning. If I pull the USB plug out and then in, flicker - rattle, and the mouse is again alive. Sometimes, the hd light will flicker and the had rattle and, if I am patient, the mouse will die and then resurrect itself - sometimes several times.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to when this happens. It will work fine for hours and then begin dieing and resurrecting. Sometimes there is one incident and then not another problem for hours or, like earlier today, there isn't five minutes that goes by with an incident. It also does not seem to matter whether I am using it or if it is sitting idle. It happens in either port.
I have not tried another mouse because I do not have another one to try.
I am open to any ideas on how to solve this problem.
Thanks in advance.

RudyTome,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
USB is a Microsoft add-on. I recommend going to the Windows Update site to make sure that your system has all available software patches.
Your issue sounds like there may be a hardware issue with the motherboard on your system. You will want to run the Dell diagnostic test on this as well as on the hard drive. This should not be rattling.
Place the System Software CD in your computer. Reset the machine and when the Dell logo appears on the screen, press and release [F2] several times until you are in the BIOS. Press the right arrow key to go to the BOOT menu or hold [Alt] and [P] simultaneously to progress to the second page. Change the boot sequence to CD/DVD drive, Floppy drive, Internal HDD. Now press [Esc] or [F10] to save and exit the BIOS.
The following knowledge base article can help you with this:
How to run the Dell diagnostic test knowledge base article.
The program should automatically load. Choose to run the test on the motherboard and hard drive.
If a failure occurs, you will want to contact Dell Support for a solution.
