USB controller problem
hi,
System Spec:
Inspiron 1564
X64 based
win 7 HP
bios: dell A13
SMB: 2.6
USB controller:
intel(R) 5 Series /3400 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller -3B34 and 3B3C
Processor:
intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M430 @ 2.27 GHz X 4
Problem:
So, the problem is - i have an External hard disk (Assembled) - seagate- ST32000542AS - 2TB, when ever i connect to this laptop it determines the driver and it install and shows the drives, after few seconds it disconnects and again it connects saying format the disk but it shows the drives, and i can access the drives & files but it keep on disconnecting and connecting and giving me the 1000 of pop ups to format(disconnecting time keeps on increase at some point of time, after 5 min, i cannot access the drive). i searched every thing and i did every thing like driver uninstall, firmware upgrade, down grade, install , win 7 uninstall, install, format, services, mmc, event vwr, power management, registry.....etc.., check with other usb ports and much more with out reaching any further success with the same story, now with out any hope i am creating this thread finally after wasting around 2 year.
while doing this experiments i lost all of my data as well and blaming my self(behalf of Mr.Dell) but god grace i recovered all using my new lovely HP lap.
the interesting thing is, just to access my data on that E-HDD i brought a new HP Laptop (with almost same config)and i can access with out any problem.
i predict it is USB controller/driver fault.
so, if any body knows any other solution or any other work around it will be a great honor to them.(behalf of Mr.Dell).

SA

Is your external hdd got its own power supply as, if not, then I'm wondering if it's asking for more power than your usb ports can supply.

I would venture that guess with bacillus on the power. Also you say you got a new HP with the same config, but does it have the same chipset? That would definately affect the way the system communicates with the external drive. Out of humor I also note that the part you gave for the hard drive is just a bare drive, what type of enclosure is it in? Have we tried a different enclosure? You said you keep getting pop ups saying to format the drive, but in device manager is it disappearing there as well? If so my guess really is a power issue since we know it connects and works on another windows 7 system. If not then we have a chipset/driver conflict between the interposer board on the external drive and the system :)

Hi,
i would rather say it is a driver or malfunctioning of chip-set & drivers! why? the answer is with the same laptop i was accessing my E-HDD for more than 3 months!(2009 some where- i don't remember exactly) then i did some update which started my count down for terrific time with this laptop! .
@malkboy, may be your answer will shed some light on this issue!
chip set- off course its a different chip set - mobile Intel hm57- i hope this could be the problem( but to diagnose more i connected my E-HDD to many computer with win 7, vista, XP.., it works fine except my dell, what a bad luck following me!)
about enclosure, it is a local market enclosure(not a branded one), i did changed the enclosure as well! with out any success as i mentioned its following me!
device manager- yes it disappears and appears rapidly.
If so my guess really is a power issue- then how come it is working earlier? and it is working with other laptops, computers(with the same, low and high config)? and with the diff OP system?and with the same adapter/power supply for the E-HDD? today i copied around 500GB from Server to this E-HDD in my HP lap with out any trouble!(aprox- 4 hours) and yesterday i run the test of SEATOOL for windows in my hp for this E-hdd around 14 hours with out interruption and it was success(my E-HDD is in GOOD HEALTH- which is making me happy).
so the conclusion where i reached is, may be it is due to driver malfunctioning or chip set malfunctioning. and some time it work for 15 - 20 min in one specific port (which is near to dvd rom) in others it dont as soon as i connects it starts playing its own game with out obeying his master, what a shame on other ports!..,( some time i think why would a company make such ports!!!)
so as i said earlier, Mr dell will be honoring those, who solves this issue. let me hope for the best.
thanks for the reply and time.
