USB device has exceeded the power limits

Question

I recently got a brand new Inspiron 600m. I tried to set up my Palm Tungsten E PDA onto it and keep on getting this error message: 'USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port' Is my notebook defective or is this a known bug? I am using the latest Palm Software.

Donno... I had a smartphone/pda which could charge from the usb.

If you go to control panel/system/hardware/device manager/USB controllers and look at each of the root hubs, i think they'll tell you how much power is being supplied to each port. Might be interesting to see what your tungsten is doing in that respect.

Sounds like your tungsten is trying to charge itself off the USB connection. Generally devices that might draw more power than a usb2.0 jack will supply (500mw) will have other source of power, like an ac jack or even a second USB plug (500mw * 2 = 1000mw).

DOes this happen if you plug your tungsten into another computer?

No, I normally use it on my Dell Dimension desktop and it works fine. The Tungsten E charges through an AC adapter.

if you have winXP SP2, SP2 actually had a more 'jumpy' detection criteria regarding USB power, so it could be the cause of your situation there, and this happens more so with powered-down USBs on some systems.    this is actually cosmetic and will not negatively affect your system's performace...none of the involved hardware is defective.
