USB gamepad not recognized

I have a d610. I am trying to connect a century concept usb gamepad to it. I install the software that came with it. Then I plug the gamepad in and I get an error message "usb device not recognized". The gamepad runs fine on my desktops so I know it works with xp. When i view game controller menu from control panel, the device is not listed. It shows up as unknown device in device manager. My usb ports seem to be working fine with other devices. The dell chat person had me install R114081.exe said it would fix problem - did not. I have tried every trick I know to get it to work. Updated bios, xp, powered down restarted, reinstalled - nothing works. Any ideas?
