USB not working.

Ok, here is what is going on.  In the device mgr I have the usb drives installed and working correctly.  I uninstalled and restared and they auto installed.  So ya... that is not going to fix the problem.

Now for the issue, any thing that I plug into either of the usb ports do not register as being plugged in at all.  I just did a full re-install of my xp OS and installed all drivers and utilitys.  I have run the diagnostic utility and it says that the usb is just fine.   I am running Win XP on a inspiron 600m.

Now my question is this.  Is there any known issues with the usb ports on this notebook?  Dose anybody have any ideas of what it could be?

Thank you for your time in looking at this and I hope that somebody out there can help.

Oh ya, and I have plugged all USB devices into other computers and they all work,  just not on my laptop.

  Thank you once again.

sunluvinbum,

When you reinstalled the drivers, did you install them in the correct order? You'll get problems like this if the updates for the system (Notebook System Software) aren't installed before the drivers for the components.

I got the same problem when I installed Vista on my Inspiron 9400. I'm now wondering if I can do the install in the correct order - after I've installed Vista and some of the drivers. Or do I need to reinstall the Notebook?? Krissi

When I did the install I did them all in the correct order.   What I am wondering is this.   Is there something in the configureation that would not allow the USB drive to read a connected device?  Or is there something that could keep the USB drive from giving power to a device.

I have reloaded windows XP (full reformat) and reinstalled all the drivers from the dell discs that were given with the laptop and still nothing ...   I even updated the bios and flashed it... nothing.  I ran the dell diagnostic utility and it says that there is nothing wrong on my puter at all.. But seeing that the USB drives do not read anything ... there definatly is.

It's usually better to completely reinstall, just to make sure that all traces of previously installed drivers are gone.

If all of the drivers were installed in the correct order then you shouldn't be having any problems with the USB channels. As for the power question, this depends on what you're trying to power. If it's something small like a USB mouse or memory key, there shouldn't be a problem, but if you're trying to power something like a printer or most external hard drives then the system doesn't have the ability to power something that size.

I did a complete reinstall of Vista, and followed the order for installation of drivers - and now all works fine. Thanks! Krissi

Ok, so when I hook up my 125 gig Western Digital xturnal HD it powers up but when I go to my computer it dose not show it as connected. I also do not see it listed in the device mgr. The same thing happens with anything that I connect via USB. I installed all drivers in the correct order and everything is working. It just dose not show that anything is connected to the USB port. Is there a setting or something that I need to enable in the bios or in the startup processes that will change this?
