USB port unknown error / glitch

Hello everyone, my name is Anthony and I own a Dell Laptop Inspiron 17 (5748, Mid 2013).

I am having a very weird problem with my USB ports and I was wondering if anyone is experiencing the same issue or can help me resolve it.

I currently have three USB ports (two 2.0 ports and one 3.0 port), all fully functional upon startup. Any device can be plugged in to any port and it will work fine. However, when I close my laptop lid or let it enter in hibernation mode, both 2.0 USB ports stop working. Nothing pops up on my screen when I connect something to those ports, regardless of it being a mouse, ipod, etc. Only the 3.0 remains functional.

Now I have done everything: virus scan, updated all drivers, reinstalled drivers, ran a diagnostic test specifically for USB ports, and even ran a system diagnostic. Unfortunately, the problem still occurs even though my Dell says everything is fine with all ports.

Like I said before, all USB ports work fine upon startup but lose functionality after laptop enters sleep/hibernation mode. Only the USB 3.0 port remains functional.

Any ideas on why this is occurring? Does anyone else experience this weird glitch?

Thank you for your time reading this post. Any help or recommendation would be much appreciated.

I didn't catch your reply until now. As another test, go into power options and configure the LCD panel to do nothing when you close it, and then close the LCD panel.  Test the USB ports and see if the problem continues.

Check the USB ports in device manager after you have noticed the problem, do you notice any difference, are they any messages for the USB devices?

I have sent you a friend request as well. Please accept it.

Thank You

TB

I actually tested this before you sent me that and it actually works! It's unfortunate that I have to use this method just to prevent the suspension of my USB ports. But in the end, it is all good.

Thanks again for your help.

This may be a power issue, where the system decides to disable the USB    ports to save power.  Click on start, control panel, power options, and try changing the power plan to “high performance”.  Then test and see if that helps.

You can also check the USB ports in Device manager.  Click start, right click my computer and choose properties, click device manager.  Look for Universal Serial Bus Controllers and you should see some devices named Generic USB Hub and possibly USB Root Hub. Right click on each of these and click on properties.  Click the power management tab and see if there is checkbox for “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” uncheck it.

I hope that this helps.

Hey Terry, thank you so much for your response. Unfortunately, and for some weird reason, the problem still persists. I have disabled the option for the Laptop to suspend USB ports in power options, I tested it on High Performance settings, and I unchecked "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in Device Manager. When I close my lid, the port simply becomes inactive.

USB Root Hub under Universal Serial Bus controllers allowed me to to uncheck the box but there were no other Generic USB options presented to me.

I don't really consider configuring closing the lid to do nothing as a fix. The USB ports should wake after being placed to sleep.

Is this something that you noticed from the start with the notebook, or something that only occurred later on? If you have a good idea when the problem started, was something installed on the system, any program, update or utility just prior to when the problem first started to occur? Try going into those programs and reconfigure them not to load when the computer is started and test to see if the problem continues.

I know that in your earlier post you mentioned that you tried reinstalling drivers, so please disregard if you have already tried these. chipset, and USB 3.0

The other thing that occurs to me that could either help with this, or be causing the problem is Dell Quickset. Check and see if Quickset is installed, if not try downloading it here.  If you do have it installed press the Windows key with the X key to open Windows mobility. I don't know if anything will be listing the USB ports here but if so toggle the settings and see if it helps.  If Quickset is installed as a test you can uninstall Quickset and see if that makes a difference.

I really don't have a lot of suggestions after this barring possibly reinstalling Windows. Replacing hardware isn't something that I suggest, this sounds more of a software / driver problem.  Or as a workaround you can keep the system from entering sleep when you know that you will be needing the USB ports.
