Updating nvidia drivers from geforce experience causes issues

Hi,

My laptop XPS 15 9560

I noticed that If I tried to update my nvidia card drivers via the nvidia geforce app I start to see blue screens.

Including..

POWER STATE FAILURE

VIDEO DXGKRNL FATAL ERROR

I've now reverted to the dell nvidia drivers via support assist and things have settled down now.

In the future should I always get my Nvidia drivers via Support assist and if so why? Whats the difference?

Thanks

Aidan

Hi aidanmack,

Thanks for posting.

What Is Driver Power State Failure?
DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE error occurs when there is power state changing, like when you place the PC to a sleep mode, when you take the PC out of sleep and when you shut down the machine.

The error may be caused by driver issues such as incompatible drivers, corrupted or outdated drivers for any hardware. So the key solution to the issues is fixing the problems related to drivers.

It's best to get your drivers from Dell as they will have tested the driver with your specific product.

I had a similar issue though worse.  I ran the NVIDIA update(4/25/17) from their app and I got the Blue screens and then I was unable to boot into Windows.  I tried on my own to fix it(Letting Windows attempt to repair itself, among other methods), called Dell support with no resolution. Dell ended up having to send a tech to replace my HDD with a fresh install of Win10.  It was a nightmare. Creating my own install USB on another computer didn't work well either. I had no network drivers and the "fresh" install locked up regularly. The new HDD with Win10 is working just fine.

Be sure to create your own recovery USB from your system in case this happens to you. Nvidia REALLY *** me off with this. Luckily I was able to get into my laptop using Ubuntu Live so important files weren't lost.

So will Dell's software do all of this for me?  I have an Nvidia icon in my tray that wants to install updates. Can I trust it? I do not want to repeat that nightmare.
